God As Your Shield
So this morning I’m pretty excited to be putting the finishing touches on our new newsletter.
I had hoped to finish it this weekend but between homework for school and running errands… well, you know how life can get. #adulting
That’s right, I just busted out a hashtag…
Ok, enough nerdiness… I want to talk to you about the love of God.
It’s been on my mind a lot lately because the newsletter I’m working on is all about His love and what that means for us.
I know that a lot of guys, especially those who didn’t grow up in the church, tend to have an issue with the whole “bride of christ” imagery that you get in a lot of worship songs these days.
I understand the Christian Mystics and what they were trying to convey with their Bridal Mysticism. I’ve even had experiences where the best way to describe them would sound more appropriate for husband and wife than God and man but that’s the result of our language and it’s inability to properly convey what was happening.
I also want to share the reason we don’t hear more about God as our strength and shield (Ps 28:7), or our fortress (Ps 18:2), or our stronghold (Ps 59:1) is because we are not out on the front lines as we should be.
Christianity as a whole has been less like king David when he was winning the hearts of Israel through battle and more like king David sitting in his palace lusting after Bathsheba.
You only need to know God as a protector when you are in danger.
When you are safe in your church building not taking any risk or responsibility there is no need to know God as shield and bulwark (Ps 91:4).
We only need His protection when we are storming the gates of hell and snatching the lost out of the fire (Jude 1:23).
I bring this up not to condemn but to challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and learn about this other side of God. The warrior and protector.
Yes, He is a lover, but part of His love is His power and protection. If we never step out and take ground for the kingdom we will never experience this part of His love.
Next month is February and everyone will be focusing on love. It’s the perfect time to talk about the love God has for us and how that is the only foundation for anything we do in the kingdom of God.
