I Wish I’d Listened To This 10 Years Ago
About 10 years ago I was talking with a pastor and he told me I was like a shotgun going everywhere. He said I needed to become like a rifle (or maybe it was a laser, I don’t really remember because I was cocky and knew everything and didn’t need to be told how to live my life.). He saw that I needed to learn to focus on one thing at a time.
Pastor Rick, I’m sorry and you were right.
I didn’t learn the lesson and had forgotten all about it until the other day when I heard it again. This time it was a story about a donkey.
The donkey was both hungry and thirsty. He was halfway between his hay and his water trough.
He wanted them both so bad but couldn’t decide which one he wanted. Ultimately, he was unable to decide and wound up dying of thirst and starvation.
Donkeys are unable to plan for the future and only know what they want at this present moment.
He was also unable to think how he could have had both if he just focused on one first.
I think I’ve been that donkey my entire life.
There are so many things I want out of life right now. All of them seem to be just out of reach.
So how do I go about making sure I get everything I want out of life?
I have 2 options here:
- I can go for everything and maybe I’ll get something… but more than likely I’ll wind up wasting a lot of energy and wind up 10 years down the road and have nothing to show for it.Or
- I can find the one thing I can accomplish right now that will make it easier to get everything else I want out of life.
You can have both the food and the water. You just need to make a decision.
It’s like finding that lead domino that knocks all the others down.
Make a list of the things you want out of life. Are there any that would set you up to accomplish the others? Are there any that would bring you more satisfaction than the others?
Once you have them written down you will know exactly what you need to focus on.
